Cross-border

With her work Meekyoung Shin (1967) explores the boundaries of time, culture and material. A very recent example is this artwork, made for this exhibition.

 

The creation process actually started two years ago, when Shin found a ceramic shard in sundaymorning@ekwc, the result of an accidental explosion in the kiln. She decided to transform the shard, pristine and fresh from the oven, into something ancient: an artifact. By shaping, bending sanding and firing the clay, she created a material that resembles a chunk of mineral rock.

 

Now, in 2021, the artist takes a new step. She stacks her ceramic stones into large rock formations. You can find these kinds of cairns all over the world: from Scotland to her native Korea and from America to Siberia. With clay as a starting point, Shin has created a universal construction that tests the boundaries of the material to its limit, is both old and new, and both Eastern and Western.

Grensoverschrijdend

Met haar kunst verkent Meekyoung Shin (1967) de grenzen van tijd, cultuur en materiaal. Een recent voorbeeld is dit kunstwerk, speciaal gemaakt voor deze tentoonstelling.

Het maakproces begon twee jaar geleden, toen Shin in sundaymorning@ekwc een keramische scherf vond, het resultaat van een onbedoelde ontploffing in de kleioven. Shin besloot om de gloednieuwe scherf, zo vers uit de oven, te transformeren tot iets ouds: een artefact. Door de klei te vormen, buigen, schuren en bakken ontstond een materiaal dat lijkt op een oeroud brok mineraalgesteente.

 

Nu, in 2021, gaat de kunstenaar nog een stap verder. Ze stapelt haar keramische stenen tot grote rotsformaties. Zulk soort gesteentes kun je over de hele wereld vinden: van Schotland tot haar geboorteland Korea en van Amerika tot Siberië. Met klei als bouwmateriaal heeft Shin een universeel bouwsel gemaakt, dat de grenzen van het materiaal verkent, zowel oud als nieuw is, en zowel Oosters als Westers.
